Can someone explain the Prius' hybrid drive -the original version?

If i understand it right,the original version had only a single motor/generator.And further; this M/G,the gas engine and the drive shafts are all connected together via a sun gear set?

Thus the car can run purely on the (fixed speed)gas engine while simultaneously charging AND vary the speed of the car simply by using the charge rate of the M/G to do the varying?If so it's all pretty clever

Yes i understand there would be other modes as well,but if the above it mostly true,then i can easily understand the other modes.It's just the way they work together that i needed to know
